How to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation

The sun is a source of joy and well-being, but excessive sun exposure can also be harmful to our skin. UV rays can lead to premature skin ageing, sunburn and even skin cancer. It is therefore important to protect yourself effectively from the sun, especially during the sun-intensive hours between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Here are some tips to make sure you protect yourself optimally from the sun:


1. Use sunscreen: 

A good quality sunscreen is key to protecting yourself from harmful UV rays. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and apply it generously to all uncovered areas of skin. Don't forget to reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.


2 Wear protective clothing: 

Dark coloured, tightly woven fabrics offer the best protection from UV rays. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection to shield your skin and eyes from direct sunlight.


3. Avoid the midday sun: 

The sun is at its most intense between 10am and 4pm. Try to stay in the shade or indoors during these hours to protect your skin from excessive sun exposure.


4. Seek shade: 

When you're outdoors, seek shade regularly, especially if you're spending long periods of time outside. Sitting under a tree, parasol or gazebo can help you reduce direct sunlight.


5. Drink enough water: 

Sun exposure can dehydrate your body, so it's important to drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated and keep your skin healthy.


6. Watch out for reflections: 

UV rays can reflect off surfaces such as water, sand, snow and concrete and reach your skin even in the shade. Therefore, apply sunscreen even in the shade and be careful not to tan on reflective surfaces.


7. Protect sensitive areas of skin: 

Don't forget to take extra care to protect sensitive areas of skin such as your face, ears, neck, lips and scalp. Use sun cream with a high SPF and wear protective clothing and hats if necessary.


By following these simple but effective tips, you can ensure that you optimally protect yourself from harmful UV rays and keep your skin healthy and glowing. Remember, sun protection is important all year round, not just in summer!
